HOW do we STOP downloading and INCREASE revenues for Local Governments???!!!Local Governments collect only 8% of all taxes but are continually burdened by downloading from Provincial and Federal levels of government, increased expectations from citizens, higher standards of construction, escalating costs, and a spiraling infrastructure dept. How do we reverse this trend? |

Putting Energy into EnergyThere is imperative and opportunity in energy production, distribution and consumption reduction. It's a relatively new area of interest for Local Governments but it's one that more and more boards and councils are considering and initiating. There are success stories and lessons to be learned by the governments on the cutting edge of these opportunities...where does the future lie? Is opportunity knocking or are we getting in over our heads? |

Proactive Climate ActionClimate Change is a significant issue for all Local Governments. Cities consume 75 percent of the world's energy and produce 80 percent of its greenhouse gases. Per capita, people living in urban settings produce significantly less greenhouse gas emmissions that those living in rural areas. Considering this, all Local Governments must and can play a significant role in reducing our collective CO2e footprint. Our decisions, policies and bylaws can have both a direct and indirect impact. Use this forum to discuss ideas and initiatives that have worked in your community. Post links to websites, articles and reports that are of interest. Start a new forum that focusses on a particular aspect of Climate Action. |

Waste NotWaste is not only an environmental issue for Local Government but a fiscal one. And there are no easy or simple solutions...there are pros and cons to everything. Bottom line: the best solution is to reduce our waste, PERIOD. With that in mind, what are your thoughts and ideas...what's worked where you live? And how did the right solution move forward. |

Water AwareWe live on what many have affectionately named the "wet coast". But does this mean that water supplies are endless and free? Of course not. Water infrastructure is a costly aspect of the service local government supplies; it's costly to build and to maintain. And of course there is an environmental cost we have not even begun to really understand. It's a provocative topic...go at 'er! |

Environment, Ecosystems, Air Quality: Education and ActionThe value of our environment, of the quality of our air and water and the importance of healthy and diverse ecosystems is often a more esoteric topic than most politicians really understand or appreciate. Food Security, Access and AgricultureThis topic is gaining momentum so quickly as pundits realize how immediate the concern is becoming and that the solutions or real security in the Lower Mainland is slipping through our fingers. This topic takes big picture thinking and long-term visioning. The indicators are disturbing so the actions and decisions of today must be equally dramatic and courageous. What are your thoughts? How Food secure are we? What needs to be done to assure our collective food security in 20 years, in 40... |

Art & Culture: Fostering our Moral ImaginationThere is an evolving interest in the specific relationship between arts and culture and the economic and social development of our communities. Cultural creation, production and presentation have gone from being almost ignored in the economic sphere to being at the centre of new development strategies. How is your community celebrating the arts in all its facets? What is the connection between arts, community, economics and humanity? |

Collaborative Community EngagementFrench social commentator and political thinker Montesquieu once said: "The tyranny of a prince in an oligarchy is not so dangerous to the public welfare as the apathy of a citizen in a democracy". Robert Maynard Hutchins [American educational philosopher and Dean of Yale Law School] went further: "The death of democracy is not likely to be an assassination from ambush. It will be a slow extinction from apathy, indifference, and undernourishment". So how can we ensure healthy, democratic participation and citizen engagement in our communities? How can we get our citizens involved not just when they are directly affected or angry? How do we take the energy and conviction we all put into complaining and transfer it to finding progressive responsible solutions and fostering good ideas and collaborative initiatives? |

Vibrant Sustainable Economic DevelopmentEconomic Development and Local Government... We don't really collect property tax to tackle this nebulous issue but it has become an expected function of Local Government. Some communities have developed sophisticated economic development offices, arm's length from political influence, while others focus economic development on strategic land use decisions, sector prioritization and collaboration with the business, development and arts and recreation communities. |
